More than 200 children with disabilities experienced joy, confidence and connection through inclusive football at OSCAR Foundation’s Enabling Change Festival held at Father Agnel Sports Ground, Vashi.
Laughter, cheers and the rhythmic thud of footballs filled the ground as children, coaches, volunteers and families came together to celebrate inclusion, ability and the unifying power of sport. The festival reflected a simple yet powerful belief: every child deserves the right to play, belong and thrive.
Inclusion Through Football at the Heart of Enabling Change
Enabling Change is OSCAR Foundation’s disability inclusion initiative that uses football as a tool to build confidence, social skills and independence among children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through regular football sessions, life-skills training and community engagement, the programme works closely with families, teachers and caregivers to create safe, inclusive spaces.
At the Enabling Change Festival at Father Agnel Sports Ground, Vashi, this vision came alive. Many children participated in a football tournament for the first time, playing confidently without labels or barriers. Abilities were diverse, but the spirit remained the same, teamwork, encouragement and joy.
Parents watched with pride as their children interacted freely and expressed themselves confidently.
“Seeing my child play confidently with others makes me incredibly happy,” shared one parent. “Earlier, he hesitated to interact. Today, he’s smiling, running and enjoying himself.”
Building Confidence Beyond the Field
For many children, the programme has meant more than learning football skills. Coaches and caregivers observed improvements in confidence, communication and social interaction.
UK volunteers supported OSCAR Foundation staff in managing the event and leading warm-up sessions.
OSCAR Foundation CEO Ashok Rathod emphasised the children’s abilities on the field. “They play like any other football team,” he said. “They are confident, skilled and really good at football.”
Families and Communities as Active Participants
Families, volunteers and OSCAR staff actively participated, cheering from the sidelines and engaging in inclusion and disability awareness activities. The festival also helped sensitize the wider community, challenging stereotypes and encouraging meaningful interaction.
A Celebration That Leaves a Lasting Impact
As the day concluded, medals were distributed to celebrate participation, effort and teamwork. Smiles lingered long after the final whistle. While the Enabling Change Festival at Father Agnel Sports Ground, Vashi was a one-day event, its impact continues beyond the field. Through Enabling Change, OSCAR Foundation reaffirms how football can be a powerful tool for inclusion, creating spaces where every child, regardless of ability, can play, grow and belong.
Empowering every child, every step. What a pleasure to have our OSCAR International sponsors, the Dhillon family with us to present trophies & medals and share the joy. Thank you Jacqueline, Sanjit, Lucas & Mia.🫶
